Oil Spill Administrator Makes Another Coast Visit

The administrator of BP’s $20 billion oil spill claims fund returns to the Gulf Coast this week amid increasing complaints that the program is failing to compensate many in need.

Attorney Kenneth Feinberg will meet tomorrow with residents, business owners and fishermen in Bayou La Batre and Orange Beach along the Alabama coast. He heads to the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.

Oil spill cleanup crews still finding tarballs

If BP Rejects Your Claim, There is an Alternative Fund

Check out ProPublica.org’s article on the Coast Guard’s National Pollution Funds Center. In order to get money from the Coast Guard, an applicant must be rejected or have waited at least 90 days after applying without a decision from the BP fund. The Coast Guard fund has narrower eligibility guidelines and cannot issue settlements as large as the BP fund’s settlements.

Kevin Costner Tells Congress About His Oil Spill Response Plan

Actor Kevin Costner invested $24 million in Ocean Therapy Solutions, a fleet of barges equipped with devices that use centrifuge to separate oil from ocean water. The ships act as first responders during a spill, cleaning water that skimmer ships have harvested. The biggest device can process about 210,000 gallons a day, according to Ocean Therapy.

Louisiana wants $173M from BP for Seafood Safety

Louisiana Gulf Coast restaurateurs, fishermen and homeowners have lobbied Gov. Bobby Jindal to make sure any oil spill cleanup includes the oysters, shrimp, crab and fish that draw visitors to the region. BP paid only 363 of 1,062 claims from rental property owners

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood is not happy with BP. The oil company has paid only 63% of the claims filed by Mississippi property owners and businesses who claim damage suffered by the oil spill.

Florida Gulf Coast Property Values Dip But Not Due to Oil Spill

It’s good news, so-so news for Florida after the oil spill. Pres. Barack Obama swam in the sapphire blue waters off Panama City with his daughter, hoping the picture perfect scene would reassure tourists.
